What can I Expect from Golf Lessons?

Whether you’re a high-handicapper or scratch golfer, a club regular or weekend warrior, taking golf lessons is a sure-fire way to improve your game.

Golf instructors can broaden your perspective and show you the way. The nature of the game is just too complicated to figure everything out for yourself.

How could you possibly know if your mishits are due to your address, path, or impact? Or might it have something to do with the improper sway of your body? Or is it all the above?

With so many variables impacting the swing, it can be hard to determine what you need to focus on.

Skilled and knowledgeable golf instructors are always in demand because they possess the blueprint for a successful golf game. They can identify where your mechanics are lacking, and then give you the necessary instructions to simplify the game.

If you’re thinking about taking up lessons, it’s important to have confidence going in. Read on to discover what you can expect to happen during a typical golf lesson.

First things first – Goals, Swing Analysis and Evaluation

During your initial swing analysis, your instructor will meet you where you are.

They’ll start by asking you about the specific goals you have and what you’d like to improve on. There might be certain areas of your game you want to work on, or you may just want to get a better grasp of all the swing fundamentals.

No matter what your current level is, a good instructor can create a plan based on your goals that’ll take you from point A to point B and beyond.

Once you’ve both set the foundation for what you’d like to achieve, your lessons shift towards a thorough analysis of your golf swing.

There’s an abundance of different factors that go into a golf swing analysis — your grip, stance, backswing, top, downswing and impact are key components. You also have the more advanced aspects of the game such as course management and the mental part of the game.

During your lessons, your instructor will watch you swing from various angles to determine what modifications can be made to improve your swing.

Instructors use a variety of advanced technology to help you build better swing habits. These range from equipment like FullSwing Simulators, 4D Motion Measurements and Swing Catalyst Video.

Everything you learn in these sessions is geared towards performing well on an actual golf course. While you can expect to spend a lot of time hitting off of mats at our facility, it is also important to get some practice on the golf course.

As your relationship with your instructor continues to grow, you’ll find it much easier to translate your new-found education into lower scores on the links.

Other Questions to Consider

Is it worth the investment?

The success of your golf game depends on the level of commitment you’re willing to put in. Simply put, if you want to play better golf, you’ve got to put in the effort.

At some point in your golf journey, you’ll likely run into obstacles that prevent you from making progress. Taking a golf lesson is one of the best things you can do to get over the hump and decrease your scorecard.

1 hour golf lessons typically cost anywhere from 60 to 100 dollars. And depending on the status or experience of the instructor, those rates can climb further into the hundreds.

These lessons can be a moderate investment of your time and money. But you’ll be happier in the long run as you start to lower your handicap and increase your enjoyment of the game.

How do I choose the right instructor?

The best advice here is to look at the websites and bios of your local golf instructors, and then give a call to the ones that most interest you. Oftentimes, they’re open to free phone consultations so you can get a sense of how they can help you.

You also want to find an instructor that suits your specific wants and needs – someone that fits your budget, schedule, and learning style.

If you think your game is already at a proficient level, but you’d like to find a coach with the chops to take you to another level, keep an eye out for their certification status. A certification ensures that your instructor has gone through an exhaustive education in golf instruction —chief among them are the PGA and USGTF programs.

A Last Word

There’s plenty of great golf coaches in Salt Lake City and its surrounding communities (Draper, Sandy, Lehi, etc.). Who you decide to go with should be based on your current skill level, goals, and gut feeling.

Do your research and don’t be afraid to give lessons a shot. Your game will thank you for it.
